We Need Each Other
A blogger I admire, BeautyBeyondBones, recently posted a piece about self help and how it is not the best way to heal those of us with emotional wounds. Her argument was that it is only through God that one can be healed. I agree with her to a point. I believe that a higher power is important in the healing process, but more than anything we need each other.
Much like the self-help industry creates the illusion that we can heal ourselves on our own, I think that there are also pitfalls in believing that a god alone can heal us. For many of us, God is very real. People who attribute their success or their good fortune to God usually have a very close and personal relationship with their god. However, for people like me, to whom god is an abstract notion and no more real than the voices inside of our heads, turning to god can be very frustrating and may leave us feeling very alone. After all, god cannot physically hold us, or tell us things about ourselves that we don’t already know because for all we know god is really just another voice in our heads. As human beings we need more than just an imaginary friend to get us through the really hard times. I believe we need each other.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not dismissing the power of faith and how the belief in a higher power can help a person heal. However, I want to emphasize the importance of being there for each other. Chances are those same people who say god got them to where they are today, or cured their cancer, had a whole team of people helping them get there. In my experience, there is no substitute for the emotional support our loved ones can offer. I believe it is through the unconditional love and support that we receive from our fellow human beings and our animal companions to a lesser degree that we heal.
We need to reach out to people and we need to take the hands of those who are reaching out to us. We need to answer the call of those who are crying out to be heard and to be loved. Perhaps, when we answer someone’s distress call, it is God or a higher power working through us. I really don’t know. I am an agnostic, so I depend on my fellow humans for strength and support when things get too difficult for me. Although I have found comfort in the idea of a higher power, that alone does not sustain me. I do not know if there is a god, but I know for a fact that there are other human beings, and for now, I choose to put my faith in humanity because I believe that is how we can change the world and make it into a wonderful place. If there is a higher power, then I believe that it is through our connections with our fellow humans that we get closer to it .
Until next time, I wish you all the best.
